This consultation seeks views as to whether the Scottish Government should introduce mandatory measures to control harvesting of live wrasse for the salmon farming industry. “The Scottish Government recognise the important role played by wrasse in controlling sea lice in salmon farms but wild caught wrasse must be fished sustainably, with effective management in place.”

It should be noted that currently only limited voluntary measures are in place which COAST considers seriously inadequate to protect populations of these long-lived, ecologically important, territorial fish.
