COAST response to consultation on requiring electronic tracking and monitoring technology on commercial fishing vessels under 12 meters. November 2023.

This consultation from the The Rural Affairs and Islands Committee is a call for views on the Sea Fisheries (Remote Electronic Monitoring and Regulation of Scallop Fishing) (Scotland) Regulations 2024.

The legislation requires the use of Remote Electronic Monitoring (REM) systems on certain scallop and certain pelagic boats, wherever they are fishing. REM uses cameras, along with gear sensors and GPS trackers, to collect data on the size of catches as well as the types of species being caught.

The objective of the legislation is to improve the capacity to monitor fishing activity in Scottish waters, and the fishing activity of Scottish fishing vessels wherever they operate.
