What do you do as a COAST volunteer?
As a Front of House volunteer my role is to welcome visitors into the centre, give them a brief tour of the exhibitions and be available for any questions they have. There are places to look things up so we don’t have to know all the answers! I enjoy chatting to them about where they come from and what they are enjoying about their stay on Arran. A highlight is seeing the delighted faces of children as they look at the wee marine creatures in our tanks.

Which is your favourite marine animal and why?
I like the scallops best as I love the way they move and the fact that they have 100 eyes.

Why do you volunteer with COAST?
I volunteer with COAST because it’s good to feel part of an organisation which is working to
preserve and renew our sadly depleted seas. The staff are very friendly and you do feel part of the team.

What would you say to local people who would like to volunteer with COAST?
The staff make us volunteers feel that any contribution we make is greatly appreciated. You don’t have to be very knowledgeable about the marine world – you just need to like meeting and talking to new people. Your volunteer shift can be flexible week-to-week; you don’t have to commit yourself to the same day each week.

Anything else you would like to add?
Come into the centre and visit – a Front of House volunteer can give you a good picture of what goes on!
