A new snorkel trail featuring some of Arran’s most beautiful bays and beaches was launched on Saturday 17th July. The self-led trail identifies areas for beginner and advanced snorkellers to explore all around Arran’s coast and discover what lies beneath the island’s waves.
On 7th November 2019, Howard was a key note speaker at the Festival for the Earth in Monte Carlo.
We recently received a very generous donation from Dr Allan, which in part was comprised from bequests from his father’s cousin, the late Alan Tod. Dr Allan donated this money due to his and Alan’s life-long attachment to Arran – including many happy holidays fishing in Lamlash Bay.
COAST's 2021 AGM saw changes to our Board of Trustees; Cicely Gill has stepped up as Chair following Russell Cheshire's retirement, and Jenni Martin's role of Secretary has been filled by Catherine Jenks.
In March 2021, North Ayrshire Council Planning Committee unanimously refused the Scottish Salmon Company's application for a salmon farm off the north east coast of Arran at Millstone Point. There was masss community opposition to this farm, which would have spoiled one of Arran's truly wild and tranquil coastlines.
An extensive flame shell bed (c. 10,000m2) has been discovered in the South Arran Marine Protected Area by local recreational divers/citizen scientists. As only the second known remaining flame shell bed in the Clyde marine region, this is a significant and exciting discovery not just for Arran but for biodiversity interests throughout the whole of Scotland.
