Volunteers were key to the success of Arran’s NTZ and MPA. Interviews with COAST volunteers about their motivations were compared with similar studies in the literature. COAST volunteers were motivated by admiration for COAST and their community engagement. ‘Self-transcendent’ motivations were more common among COAST volunteers.
